Description: Deciduous shrubs.
Leaves opposite, simple; stipules very small or absent.
Inflorescences erect or drooping, flowers in whorled spikes surrounded by leafy bracts that persist in fruit. Calyx unequally 5-lobed, persistent in fruit. Corolla funnel-shaped, nearly equally 5-lobed and swollen at base. Stamens 5, inserted on corolla tube. Ovary inferior, 5–8-locular; stigma capitate.
Fruit a berry, many-seeded.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 6 species, Himalaya Mtns, China. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
