Description: Perennial herbs with bulb; roots fibrous.
Leaves annual, basal, linear.
Inflorescence umbellate, scapose; spathe boat-shaped. Flowers actinomorphic, pedicellate. Tepals 6, free or fused at base. Stamens 6, inserted on fleshy disc; filaments slender; anthers dehiscing by apical pores. Ovary inferior, 3-locular; ovules several per loculus; placentation axile; style slender; stigma small.
Fruit a capsule; seeds many, usually black.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 2 species, northern Europe to SW Asia. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
