Description: Erect herbs; branches 4-angular; hairs simple.
Leaves petiolate, decussate, often lobed or palmately or pinnately dissected.
Inflorescence leafy, spike-like to thyrse-like with sessile many-flowered cymes forming dense clusters in each leaf axil; bracts narrow, rigid. Calyx 5-lobed; lobes ± equal, narrow, tooth-like, subulate or spinescent. Corolla 2-lipped, lower lobe very large and deeply notched, upper lobe entire, erect and convex. Stamens 4, in 2 pairs, fertile; anthers with 2 loculi fertile; loculi parallel.
Mericarps 3-keeled.
Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 8 species, mainly temperate Asia & Europe. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
