Description: Annual to perennial taprooted herbs covered with glandular or non-glandular hairs, or glabrous; stem terete, usually solitary, branching above.
Leaves basal and cauline, alternate, flat, entire to lyrate-pinnatifid.
Heads numerous in loose panicles, small, pedunculate, ovoid to campanulate; involucral bracts 2-seriate; outer bracts 2–5, minute, scale-like; inner bracts much larger, equal, herbaceous, lanceolate, remaining erect in fruit; receptacle flat, naked, pitted. Florets all ligulate, few, bisexual, fertile; corolla yellow, tube shorter than ligule and pubescent above. Style branches filiform, dark.
Achenes compressed-fusiform, curved, fine ribbed, glabrous; pappus absent.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 9 species, Europe & Asia. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
