Description: Herbs or subshrubs.
Leaves opposite, stipules sheathing, toothed or fimbriate.
Flowers in terminal cymes, bisexual, 4-merous. Calyx tubular, usually with 4 minute teeth; persistent in fruit. Corolla tube slender, valvate in bud. Stamens 4, inserted on throat of corolla. Ovary 2-locular, with 1 ovule per loculus; style shortly 2-lobed.
Fruit a dry capsule, carpels 2 separating from the base upwards or falling entire.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 15 species, Indomelesia. Australia: 1 species (endemic).
