Description: Erect, succulent, perennial herbs or shrubs, occasionally woody at base, often regenerating from base.
Leaves opposite, rarely whorled, simple, pinnatifid or pinnate, not forming plantlets along margins.
Flowers usually 4-merous, erect or spreading in terminal cymes. Sepals acute and basally fused, often ± inflated. Petals fused and exceeding the calyx. Stamens twice as many as petals, in 2 rows inserted on the petals at or above the middle. Carpels 4, free or basally fused.
Follicles 4, clustered, many-seeded.
Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 120–200 species, mostly Africa, Madagascar, to Asia & Brazil. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
