Description: Trees, sometimes shrubs.
Leaves opposite, usually bipinnate [or pinnate].
Inflorescence often a terminal panicle; calyx campanulate to tubular; corolla tubular campanulate, blue to purple-blue to magenta; stamens 4, included.
Fruit a woody, orbicular or elliptic- to ovate-oblong capsule; seeds thin, surrounded by a membranous, hyaline or brownish wing.
Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 50 species, tropical and subtropical regions, Mexico to S. America; widely planted. Naturalised in N.S.W. and Qld.
