Description: Shrubs or small trees.
Leaves opposite, occasionally in whorls of 3; stipules interpetiolar, sheathing, acuminate.
Inflorescences terminal corymbs or panicles; floral bracts at base of inflorescence free. Flowers often 3 together, bisexual, protandrous. Calyx tube 4- or 5-toothed or lobed. Corolla tubular, 4- or 5-lobed, contorted in bud. Anthers usually exserted. Ovary 2- or 3-locular; ovules one per loculus. Style shorter than or equal to corolla lobes; stigmas 2.
Fruit a drupe usually with 2, 1-seeded pyrenes.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 400 species, pantropical. Australia: 6 species (most species endemic), Qld, N.S.W., N.T., W.A.
