Description: Succulent spinose climbing plants with stems 3-angled, 3-ridged or 3-winged; climbing by adventitious roots. Areoles bearing short spines; glochids absent.
Flowers nocturnal. Hypanthium with scale leaves. Perianth funnel-shaped; petaloid lobes spreading.
Fruit ± globose, fleshy, surrounded by fleshy bracts, without spines or scales.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 17 species, Mexico to Peru. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
