Description: Terrestrial, epilithic or epiphytic plants, with stems not differentiated into 2 systems; stems aggregated with a basal tuft of roots (branches sometimes rooting near the tips or along prostrate shoots).
Leaves similar or varying in shape and size. Strobili not developed.
Sporophylls identical to vegetative leaves or gradually or abruptly reduced, persisting after sporangia dehisce. Sporangia axillary; spores pitted or grooved. Gametophyte cylindrical, fully saprophytic.
Distribution and occurrence: World: >200 spp., cosmopolitan. Australia: 12 spp., Qld, N.S.W., Vic., Tas.
