Description: Tufted rhizomatous perennials.
Ligule short, membranous, truncate, shortly ciliate; blade flat to tightly folded, scabrous, rolled in bud.
Inflorescence an open or contracted panicle. Spikelets solitary, laterally compressed, disarticulating above the glumes and between the several florets, rachilla hairy. Glumes 3–7-nerved, subequal. Lemmas coriaceous, keeled throughout, 5–11-nerved, subacute to shortly awned, often bidenticulate, scaberulous; callus hairy; ovary glabrous; hilum of grain oval, c. 25% of caryopsis length.
Distribution and occurrence: A genus of 2 species, endemic to Australia. Two species grow in N.S.W. in subalpine and montane woodland.
Formerly included in Festuca or Austrofestuca. Named after J.D. Hooker.
