Description: Small procumbent herbs; stipules ciliate, scarious.
Leaves opposite.
Flowers small, green, sessile in axillary clusters. Sepals 5, free or almost so. Petals 0. Stamens 2–5. Ovary 1-locular; styles 2, short, united at base.
Capsule membranous, indehiscent, enclosed in the calyx; seed 1, reddish brown, glossy.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 47 species, Africa, Asia & Europe. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
