Description: Erect tufted annuals; culms smooth, nodes exserted from sheaths.
Leaves with ligule membranous; blade flat or involute, subulate, smooth.
Inflorescence a rigid cylindrical spike, straight or slightly curved.
Spikelets with 1 bisexual floret, sessile, embedded alternately in the hard rachis, falling with the joint, somewhat longer than the internode. Glume solitary (terminal floret with 2 glumes), stiff, lanceolate, acuminate, 5-nerved, closing the hollow rachis. Lemma translucent, lanceolate, acute, finely 3-nerved, back of the lemma against the rachis. Palea thin, 2-nerved.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 1 species, southern Europe. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
