Description: Annual to perennial herbs.
Leaves ± linear, opposite, sometimes appearing whorled, fused at base; stipules absent.
Flowers in dichasial cymes, or sometimes in heads or solitary; bracts green, scarious. Calyx ovoid, 5-toothed, with 5 veins forming prominent angles. Petals 5. Stamens 10. Ovary 1-locular; styles 2.
Capsule opening by 4 teeth.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 100 species, chiefly SE Europe to West Africa. Australia: 1 species (native)
