Description: Evergreen herbs, rhizomatous.
Leaves distichous, with longitudinal venation.
Inflorescences multiple, perennial, usually much longer than the leaves, branches of peduncle themselves condensed and branched. Spadices spathe-less, stalked, clustered, distichous, each subtended by a prophyll, often in all stages of development at any time of the year. Flowers 2-merous, bisexual. Tepals 4, scale-like. Stamens 4, opposite tepals.
Fruit a 1-seeded berry.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 1 species, endemic Australia. Australia: 1 species, endemic.
There is some doubt as to whether Gymnostachys belongs in this family.
