Description: Perennial herbs, stems often procumbent.
Leaves opposite, radical and cauline.
Inflorescence spicate, axillary, 1–30-flowered. Flowers bisexual, sessile, with a bract and a bracteole. Perianth 5-lobed, fused for half the length, hairy, especially in lower half, the lobes membranous. Stamens 5, filaments forming a tube about half the length, free from the perianth. Style 1; stigma 2-lobed.
Fruit a membranous dehiscent utricle; seed 1.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 5 species, America. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
