Description: Trees or tall shrubs; stem and branches, glabrous or hairy with simple hairs.
Leaves simple, decussate, petiolate.
Inflorescence cymose, compound and much branched, terminal, pedunculate. Flowers zygomorphic. Calyx tubular or campanulate, truncate or 4- or 5-toothed, generally with large glands, persistent in fruit. Corolla tube dilated upwards; ± 2-lipped, upper lip 2-lobed, lower lip 3-lobed. Stamens 4, didynamous, slightly exserted or almost included in corolla tube. Ovary 4-locular; style filiform, with 2 unequal stigmatic lobes.
Fruit a succulent drupe.
Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 33 species, Africa, Asia, Malesia, Australia. Australia: 5 species (2 species endemic), Qld, N.S.W., N.T.
