Description: Annual or perennial herbs.
Leaves alternate or opposite.
Inflorescence a dichasium, axillary. Perianth segments 5, free, white or with tinges of pink or green. Stamens 3–20, often some staminodes present. Ovary superior, 3–5-locular; styles 3–5.
Capsule delicate, dehiscing loculicidally; seeds numerous, carunculate.
Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 12 species, tropical & warm-temp. regions. Australia: 3 species, all mainland States.
