Description: Annual herbs.
Leaves opposite, entire or toothed.
Heads pedunculate, in loose terminal cymes; heads hemispherical to campanulate; involucral bracts few, herbaceous to membranous, 1–3-seriate, inner bracts each clasping a ray floret, subtended by 2–4 similar bracts about half the size that do not clasp a floret; receptacle conical, with narrow 2- or 3-toothed scales. Ray florets female, fertile, with small ligules; style branches filiform; ray achenes curved, compressed; pappus of bristles or absent. Disc florets tubular-funnelform, bisexual, fertile, 5-toothed; anthers minutely saggitate at the base; style branches flattened, with short appendages. Disc achenes 4- or 5-angled or slightly compressed; pappus of long scales, awned, toothed or fimbriate, sometimes much reduced or absent.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 14 species, North & South America. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
