Description: Perennial subshrubs or herbs [rarely annuals], with prostrate or ascending stems.
Leaves simple, entire; hairs bifid.
Flowers axillary, solitary or cymose; bracteolate. Sepals 5, free, equal or subequal. Corolla rotate [or funnel-shaped], entire to 5-lobed, with pilose mid-petaline bands. Stamens 5, filaments unequal, glabrous. Ovary 2-locular with 2 ovules per loculus, glabrous [or rarely pilose]; styles 2, each bifid and bearing linear stigmas.
Capsule globose, splitting longitudinally into 4 valves.
Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 100 species, mainly tropical & subtropical America. Australia: 1 species (native).
