Description: Small shrubs, rarely annual or perennial herbs.
Leaves alternate, often crowded, pinnately lobed with broad or narrow lobes, or entire.
Heads solitary, or in lax corymbs or panicles; involucral bracts 1- or 2-seriate, ± fused low down, ovate or lanceolate, ribbed, glabrous; receptacle convex, naked, smooth or slightly pitted. Ray florets female; ligule ± acute or 3- or 4-toothed, strap-shaped; sometimes absent. Disc florets bisexual or functionally male; corolla tubular below, widening or campanulate above, 5-lobed, glabrous. Anthers bases obtuse, appendage lanceolate. Style branches linear-oblong, flattened or semiterete, apex truncate.
Achenes ribbed to smooth; pappus few to many non-persistent bristles or absent.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 5 species, southern Africa. Australia: 2 sp (naturalized).
