Description: Erect or ascending herbs.
Leaves alternate, sessile.
Heads in cymose or corymbose inflorescences; heads cylindrical or campanulate; involucral bracts in 1 row, oblong-linear with pale margins, parallel-veined, during anthesis erect and in the lower part cohering, afterwards reflexed; receptacle naked, flat. Ray florets absent. Disc florets bisexual, 5-toothed; corolla tubular. Anthers entire at the base, without appendage, acute at the apex. Style arms filiform, obtuse to acute, apex with triangular hairy tips.
Achenes cylindrical, 5-angled, ± ribbed, glabrous or pilose, truncate; pappus hairs numerous, soft, silky.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 30 species, pantropical. Australia: 1 species (endemic).
