Description: Tall, reed-like perennials.
Leaves with ligule thinly to firmly membranous, often becoming laciniate.
Inflorescence a broadly pyramidal panicle. Spikelets bisexual, 3–7-flowered, laterally compressed, rachilla disarticulating above the glumes and between the lemmas. Lemmas firm, turgid, scarcely keeled, 5-nerved, the nerves raised. Stamens 3. Ovary shortly oblong, with minute stiff hairs at apex.
