Description: Shrubs or trees, with simple hairs, unarmed.
Leaves opposite or whorled, 1-foliolate or simple, pinnately 2- or 4-foliolate or 3-foliolate; leaflets with margins entire or toothed.
Inflorescences terminal or terminal and axillary in the upper axils, paniculate. Flowers bisexual, 4-merous. Sepals 4, fused at base or up to a third their length, persistent in fruit. Petals 4, imbricate or valvate, free, not persistent in fruit. Stamens 8, free, divergent, alternating ± unequally. Carpels 4, basally fused, lacking a sterile apex; styles fused, arising from about the middle of the carpels; stigma scarcely differentiated from style; ovules 2 in each carpel.
Fruit of 1–4 follicles, smooth or faintly wrinkled, with rounded or truncate apices; seeds released (probably forcibly) from dehiscing follicles, shiny, black.
