Description: Tufted glabrous perennials.
Leaves with ligule membranous; blade flat, folded or inrolled when dry.
Inflorescence a loose, open, much-branched panicle.
Spikelets with 2 bisexual florets, the hairy rachilla produced beyond the upper floret, disarticulating above the glumes and between the lemmas. Glumes subequal, acute, persistent. Lemmas glabrous or hairy, with a dorsal awn.
Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 40 species, temperate and cold (including polar) regions of Northern & Southern Hemispheres. Australia: 1 species (native).
