Description: Tufted perennials with strongly compressed aerial shoots.
Leaves with ligule membranous; blade folded in bud, flat.
Inflorescence a short, erect, contracted panicle, spreading at anthesis. Spikelets almost sessile, in dense, 1-sided clusters at the ends of the branches, 2–5-flowered, disarticulating above the glumes and between the lemmas. Glumes persistent, unequal, 1–3-nerved. Lemmas keeled, 5-nerved.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 5 species, Europe, northern Africa & Asia. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
