Description: Terrestrial ferns; rhizome short, erect or ascending, densely covered with broad scales.
Fronds 1-pinnate with a terminal pinna or upper part of frond pinnatifid, leathery; pinnae rather broad, often unequal at the base, the margin entire or toothed. Veins usually anastomosing but sometimes almost free.
Sori circular, mostly terminal on the veins; indusium peltate.
Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 25 species, eastern Asia & America. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
