Description: Perennial herbs.
Leaves alternate, broad, palmately veined, petiolate.
Flowers solitary in leaf axils; bracteoles absent. Sepals ± equal. Corolla 2-lipped, produced into a spur at base; upper lip 2-lobed, lower lip 3-lobed, with at its base a prominent palate closing the mouth. Stamens 4, didynamous, included in corolla; anthers cohering in pairs, 2-locular. Stigma entire.
Capsule with the 2 loculi dehiscing at the apex by several fissures; seeds many, tuberculate-wrinkled.
Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 10–15 species, Mediterranean region & western Europe. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
