Description: Annual or rhizomatous perennial herbs, erect to prostrate.
Leaves alternate, linear to ± ovate, entire to pinnately dissected.
Flowers in terminal head-like clusters. Calyx campanulate to obconic; lobes herbaceous and greenish. Corolla funnel- to trumpet-shaped; lobes spathulate to lanceolate. Stamens equally to unequally inserted on the throat, the filaments equal or unequal in length. Ovary 2-locular.
Capsule ellipsoid to obovoid; seeds oblong, 1–3 per loculus, often more or less mucilaginous when wet.
Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 15 species, North & South America. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
