Description: Herbs or small shrubs.
Leaves alternate or radical, toothed, lobed or pinnate.
Heads terminal in loose corymbs; heads campanulate; involucral bracts in 1 row, linear, imbricate; receptacle flat, naked. Ray florets female, ligulate, yellow, in a single row. Disc florets bisexual, fertile, tubular, 5-merous, yellow or green. Style branches truncate, penicillate.
Achenes obovate, compressed, black or dark brown, margins thickened, winged, glabrous or ciliate; pappus of fine scabrous hairs, not persistent.
Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 50 species, southern & tropical Africa. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
