Description: Trees or shrubs.
Leaves alternate, usually 2-ranked, toothed, crenate or entire, translucent dots and streaks often present; stipules small, shed early.
Flowers bisexual, axillary, mostly clustered, sometimes reduced to a solitary flower. Calyx 5-lobed. Petals absent. Stamens 5–12.
Fruit a capsule, usually 3-valved.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 160 species, tropical & subtropical regions; Australia: c. 7 species, Qld, N.S.W.
Casearia was previously placed in the now synonymised family Flacourtiaceae.
