Description: Tufted, rhizomatous or stoloniferous perennials or annuals with simple or branching culms.
Leaves with ligule very short; blade usually flat.
Inflorescences paniculate, loose, terminal, usually rather stiff. Spikelets mostly paired, 2-flowered. Rachilla glabrous, readily disarticulating above the glumes and between the florets.
Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 50 species, mostly tropical and subtropical Asia & America, also Africa & Australia. Australia: 4 species (native), Qld, N.S.W., N.T., W.A.
