Description: Erect herbs, minutely, sometimes obscurely gland-dotted.
Leaves opposite, simple, 3-veined at the base, sessile.
Inflorescence terminal, an open raceme or spike, subtended by small bracts; bracteoles absent. Sepals 5, fused only at base, acute. Corolla 2-lipped; tube dilated with 4 stout protuberances opposite the stamens, the upper lip large, emarginate, the lower lip 3-lobed, spreading. Stamens 4, didynamous; lower filaments with a thick spur towards base; anther loculi confluent, divergent, acute. Stigma perpendicular to the style, with 2 broad equal flaps.
Capsule 2-valved, septifragal, leaving a central column with remnants of the septum attached; seeds numerous, ± angled, papillose.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 3 species, tropics, Africa, Asia to Java & Australia. Australia: 1 species (endemic).
