Description: Small trees or shrubs.
Leaves opposite, simple, margins toothed; stipules minute.
Inflorescence variable. Flowers bisexual [or unisexual], 4- or 5-merous. Disc present. Stamens 4–15, dehiscing by 2 subapical lateral slits. Ovary 2–4-locular; ovules 2 per loculus.
Fruit a berry.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 5 species Australia, New Zealand, Chile & Peru. Australia: 2 species, N.S.W., Vic., Tas.
