Description: Tall trees with mostly well-developed buttresses; new growth and often the lower leaf surface with peltate scales.
Leaves palmately compound with 3–9 leaflets, rarely reduced to 1 or 2, leaflets entire.
Inflorescence axillary, paniculate, with scales and stellate hairs; flowers unisexual, male flowers more common than females; plants monoecious. Calyx cupular, mostly 5-lobed, white or cream, 4–7 mm long. Petals absent. Male flowers with an androgynophore bearing at its apex sessile anthers. Female flowers with 3–5 distinct, sessile carpels, each with 1 ovule; styles short, cohering; staminodes 15, clustered at the base of the carpels.
Fruit indehiscent, a samara consisting of an ellipsoid to globose nut with a woody epicarp extended into a wing.

The species in New South Wales were previously included in the genus Heritiera.
