Description: Bristly or glabrescent annual herbs or sometimes slightly woody perennials.
Leaves hastate basally, 3-, 5- or 7-lobed or divided, margins entire, petiolate.
Flowers axillary, solitary or in racemes or panicles. Epicalyx absent. Calyx 5-lobed. Petals obovate, as long as or longer than the calyx. Staminal column with numerous apical filaments. Ovary 10–many-locular, each loculus 1-ovulate; style branches as many as loculi.
Fruit a flattened schizocarp, breaking into 1-seeded dehiscent mericarps, often beaked or spurred.
Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 15 species, tropical America. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
