Description: Rhizome erect, forming a very short trunk.
Fronds usually very long and arching; base of stipe fleshy and swollen; lamina 2-pinnate; pinnae long, attached to the rachis by swollen bases; pinnules attached by short swollen stalks, veins free.
Sori submarginal, made up of groups of sporangia; sporangia relatively large, splitting down the centre.
Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 100 species, Madagascar, Japan, Asia to Pacific. Australia: 1 species (native).
