Description: Shrubs or small trees, mostly dioecious.
Leaves alternate, margins with spinose teeth; shortly petiolate.
Flowers usually in short axillary spikes, several males clustered together, females usually solitary. Perianth segments 4, 1–1.5 mm long. Stamens 8. Stigmas 3; ovules 1 per loculus.
Capsule 3-lobed.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 70 species, tropical regions. Australia: 3 species, Qld, N.S.W.
