Description: Perennial herbs with woody rhizomes.
Leaves palmatifid or palmately compound.
Inflorescence compound, cymose; flowers small, ± aggregated into clusters. Hypanthium urn-shaped. Epicalyx bracts usually 4. Sepals usually 4. Petals absent. Stamens 1–5, inserted on rim of disc. Carpel 1; style basal.
Fruit an achene, wholly or partly enclosed in hypanthium.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 250 species, temperate & tropical mtns. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
