Description: Mostly annual or perennial herbs, sometimes climbing shrubs or vines.
Leaves alternate or opposite, simple or compound; stipules absent.
Inflorescence terminal or axillary, usually cymose or 1–3-flowered. Flowers actinomorphic or slightly zygomorphic, bisexual, with or without bracteoles. Calyx lobes 5, valvate or imbricate, persistent in fruit. Corolla tubular or campanulate, lobes 5. Stamens 5, epipetalous, alternating with the corolla lobes. Ovary superior, mostly 3-locular; ovules 1–many in each loculus, placenation axile; style simple, filiform.
Fruit a loculicidal capsule.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 18 genera, chiefly North America, also Chile, Peru, Europe & northern Asia. Australia: 3 genera, 4 species, N.S.W., Vic., Tas., S.A., W.A.
