Family DICKSONIACEAE

Description: Terrestrial ferns; rhizome creeping or erect, sometimes arborescent and reaching a height of 1 m or more, densely covered with hairs; stipes not articulated to the rhizome, densely hairy at the base.

Fronds uniform or somewhat dimorphic, large, vernation circinate; lamina pinnate or more compound, leathery; veins free.

Sori numerous, ± circular, marginal or submarginal, indusiate; indusium double, 2-valved or cup-shaped, consisting of a recurved marginal lobe (false indusium) and an inner, true, indusium.


Distribution and occurrence: World: 5 genera, c. 50 species, tropical to southern temperate regions. Australia: 1 genus, 3 species, Qld, N.S.W., Vic., Tas., S.A.
